Course Information: This class will introduce students to basic veterinary practices used in animal industries. Terminology and disease prevention will be discussed. Students will have the chance to take temperatures, perform fecal culture for parasites, and examine sperm motility. Students will also practice administering shots to oranges and grapefruits. The students will also study the birth, lactation, and growth of litters of baby pigs born in the large animal lab. This class can be applied to as a 1/2 Biological Science equivalency in order to fulfill the graduation requirement.

  • Identify the importance of MSDS sheets

  • Describe the role and regulations of OSHA pertaining to veterinary science

  • Identify the physical, chemical, biological, and zoonotic hazards associated with the veterinary industry

  • Identify safety signs and equipment used in veterinary science

  • List the types of cleansers, disinfectants, and antiseptics used in veterinary occupations and their purpose

  • Analyze veterinary terminologies and their meanings

  • Explain the functions of the skeletal system

  • Explain the function of the muscular system

  • Identify proper injection sites

  • Describe the function of the respiratory system

Prerequisite: AG153 - Intro to Animal Science

Notes: This course can fulfill either the CTE requirement or the biological science credit.
