Course Information:

Students will be introduced to, research, and discuss the evolution of western philosophy through various aspects of social, theological, political, and contemporary philosophies. Students will explore the relationship between history, literature and philosophy, through reading, analyzing, and discussing such works as Plato’s Republic, St. Thomas Aquinas’ Summa Theological, and Justein Gaarder’s Sophie’s World.

Outcomes:

• Cite and use textual information to support ideas in primary source and non-fiction formats in order to draw larger inferences

• Demonstrate understanding and use of philosophical content vocabulary in both written and oral formats

• Identify and explain a variety of philosophical movements associated with western civilization

• Analyze the purpose and the importance of these philosophical movements on society in relation to its historical social context as well as its modern impact

• Produce clear and coherent extended writings and presentations appropriate to the grade level and purpose

• Incorporate a variety of media into presentations

• Analyze source material and non-fiction to determine the guiding principles and central themes of a philosophical work

• Analyze their own writing and the writing of others in order to produce writing free of sentence structure, punctuation, style, and spelling errors

• Master the analytical skills of Socratic questioning and Socratic discussion
