SC621 BIOLOGY 2

Course: SC621 Biology 2

Grade: 11, 12

Subject Area: Science

Type: Standard

Credits: 1

Prerequisites: Chemistry

Notes: This course will fulfill the biological science credit for graduation.

This is a year long course that requires selection of both semesters: S1 and S2. This course is designed to give in-depth coverage of the molecular and cellular basis of life, the underlying mechanisms of biological inheritance, how biological change takes place, and the nature of micro-organisms and ecology. This course serves as a foundation for AP Biology. This course will fulfill the biological science credit for graduation. Examination of ecological systems include: communities, biomes, and population ecology.

Outcomes:

  • Describe and apply laws of Mendelian inheritance to probability, complex genetics principles, disorders, and human inherited traits

  • Describe and apply chromosomal patterns of inheritance, gene linkage, sex-linkage patterns, and chromosomal disorders

  • Perform and create a lab report based on the inheritance patterns of Drosophila Melanogaster, examining Mendel’s Laws, Morgan’s theories, and gene frequency

  • Identify practical applications of DNA technology and types/uses of DNA analysis

  • Identify the structure, life cycle, and infectious evolution of viruses and make connections to real life infection scenarios

  • Identify the morphology, metabolics, and life cycle of different types of prokaryotes and make connections to their roles in the biosphere and impacts on humans

  • Identify and describe the interactions of ecological systems in terms of biotic and abiotic factors, biomes, biodiversity, and disturbances

  • Describe the dynamic biological processes of population ecology, population growth models, and age structures as related to human populations
