Course Information: In this class students will explore applications of biotechnology after studying cells and DNA. Applications in the world of animals, plants and the environment will be learned. Students will spool their own DNA, perform a crime scene investigation and study one of the fastest growing career fields today. This class can be applied as a 1/2 Biological Science equivalency in order to fulfill the graduation requirement.

  • Explain the Mendelian Law of Genetics

  • Analyze a Punnett Square

  • Discuss the makeup of chromosomes in a cell

  • Discuss the process of DNA transfer

  • Specify how genetics principles are used in plant breeding

  • Define genetic engineering

  • Explain the process of gene mapping

  • Cite examples of how genetic engineering is currently being used

  • Assess societal concerns about the use of genetic engineering

  • Describe biomediation processes

  • Investigate the engineering process as related to plants and animals
