Course Information:

This course is a continuance of promotion of literary development in a wide range of areas. Students have the opportunity to read significant literary works while continuing to use the tools necessary to analyze and evaluate various literary genres, along with further development of journal writing, essay writing, and literary analysis. This is a discussion-based course; students are expected to generate questions and demonstrate analysis, synthesis, and evaluation independently.

Outcomes:

  • Cite strong and thorough evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly, as well as inferences drawn from the text, including determining where a text leaves matters uncertain

  • Integrate and evaluate multiple sources of information presented in different media or formats as well as in words in order to address a question or solve a problem

  • Read and comprehend literary nonfiction in the grade’s text complexity band proficiently, with scaffolding as needed

  • Draw evidence from literary or informational texts to support analysis, reflection, and research

  • Write arguments to support claims in an analysis of substantive topics or texts using valid reasoning and relevant and sufficient evidence

  • Write informative/explanatory texts to examine and convey complex ideas
