Course Information:

This is a year long course that requires selection of both semesters: S1 and S2. Accelerated Course Gateway Technical College One goal of Spanish IV is to master basic communication skills. Students will extend reading skills to the short story, and broaden writing skills to letter writing and compositions. The class is taught entirely in Spanish, and students are expected to use only Spanish in class. This course stresses conversational practice in Spanish and includes a review and continuation of grammar, which will include the compound tenses and the subjunctive. Reading components will include articles, poetry, short stories, and other realia, and political reality in Central and South America is studied through stories, songs, and analysis of the films Voces Inocentes, Romero and La Historia Oficial. Additional cultural units may include the art of Goya, Velazquez, El Greco, Kahlo, Rivera, Posada, and Picasso, as well as Dia de los Muertos.

Outcomes:

  • Engage in intermediate conversation: provide and obtain information, express feelings, emotions and personal needs, and exchange opinions

  • Understand and interpret written and spoken language with a variety of topics

  • Present information, concepts, and ideas to an audience of listeners or readers on a variety of topics, demonstrating an intermediate to advanced level of vocabulary and grammatical structure

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between the practices, perspectives, and products of the Spanish-speaking cultures studied

  • Acquire information and recognize the distinctive viewpoints that are only available through the Spanish language and its cultures

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the nature of language through comparisons of Spanish and English

  • Show evidence of becoming life-long learners by using the Spanish language both within and beyond the school setting

Prerequisites: FL300-S1 – Spanish III S1 AND FL300-S2 – Spanish III S2

Corequisites: If you take this course, you must also take FL400-S2 – Spanish IV S2

College Readiness: This course counts as 1 year of foreign language. (Taking four years of Spanish (ie. Spanish I, II, III, & IV) at DDHS equates to 4 years of foreign language preparation for college readiness. Students may be eligible to test out of, &/or earn retro-credit, at their college/university if they pass this course.)
