SC500 CHEMISTRY

Course: SC500 Chemistry

Grade: 10, 11, 12

Subject Area: Science

Type: Standard

Credits: 1

Prerequisites: Biology, Algebra

Notes: This course will fulfill the physical science credit for graduation

This is a year long course that requires selection of both semesters: S1 and S2. Chemistry provides the background and skills necessary for the student to interpret and predict physical and chemical behavior at both the atomic and macroscopic level. This course will fulfill the physical science credit for graduation. Chemistry is a lab-oriented course designed to introduce the student to the systematic study of matter and energy and its changes. The course emphasizes the measurement of matter and energy, the tools used and the units of expressing such measurements.

Outcomes:

  • Perform laboratory experiments demonstrating safe and proper use of appropriate equipment, gather data, perform the appropriate calculations and draw appropriate conclusions from their results

  • Solve problems in an efficient and accurate manner

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the basic structure of atoms, ions and compounds by correctly predicting behavior of substances during physical and chemical changes

  • Demonstrate an understanding of chemical nomenclature through the naming and the writing of chemical formulas for elements, ions and compounds

  • Apply the laws of conservation of mass and energy as they apply to physical and chemical change
